Is your acne telling you something?

Dispite the fact that my teenage years are more than a decade behind me, I am still plagued by random bouts with acne.  Each morning I find myself scanning my face for signs of a new break out or worse, a cluster of break outs, particularly along my jaw line.  Sigh.  Tonight, I stumbled upon this post from The Beauty Gypsy,  a fun and cool beauty blog, which gave me some new insight about what it all means.  I had to pass this info along to you.  Enjoy!

What is your acne telling you?

I always knew that the once-monthly spots that overtook my chin were the result of not-so-stable hormones. However, when my dermatologist took one look at the sudden outcrop of angry zits on my nose and asked me to get my blood pressure checked, it introduced me to a whole new (actually old) science of face mapping, which is pretty much the key to unlocking the mysteries behind problem skin.
Face mapping, which is fast taking centre stage at most clinics nowadays, combines Ayurveda and ancient Chinese medicine with cutting edge dermatologists’ prescriptions to explain how certain parts of your face are connected to other areas of your body. Put simply, think of your face as a map and blemishes as X’s on that landscape. Spots in different zones correspond to different problems. So, with this “map” as your guide, you can address the underlying causes of blemishes and not only make the unsightly zits vanish but also treat the underlying health problem in time.
Pretty awesome, right? Try it out: Here is how to decode breakouts in the basic areas.

1 & 2: Digestive System — Eat less processed or junk food, reduce the amount of fat in your diet, step up water intake and opt for cooling things like cucumbers.

3: Liver — Cut out the alcohol, greasy food and dairy. This is the zone where food allergies also show up first, so take a look at your ingredients. Besides all this, do 30 minutes of light exercise every day and get adequate sleep so your liver can rest.
4 & 5: Kidneys — Anything around the eyes (including dark circles) point to dehydration. Drink up!
6: Heart — Check your blood pressure (mine was slightly high) and Vitamin B levels. Decrease the intake of spicy or pungent food, cut down on meat and get more fresh air. Besides this, look into ways to lower cholesterol, like replacing “bad fats” with “good fats” such as Omegas 3 and 6 found in nuts, avocados, fish and flax seed. Also, since this area is chock-full of dilated pores, check that your makeup is not past its expiry date or is skin-clogging.
7 & 8: Kidneys — Again, drink up! And cut down on aerated drinks, coffee and alcohol as these will cause further dehydration.
Zone 9 & 10: Respiratory system — Do you smoke? Have allergies? This is your problem area for both. If neither of these is the issue, don’t let your body overheat, eat more cooling foods, cut down on sugar and get more fresh air. Also keep the body more alkaline by avoiding foods that make the body acidic (meat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, sugar) and adding more alkalizing foods like green veggies and wheatgrass juice. Another thing that most of forget – dirty cell phones and pillow cases are two of the top acne culprits and this area is what they affect the most!
Zone 11 & 12: Hormones — This is the signature zone for stress and hormonal changes. And while both are sometimes unavoidable, you can decrease their effect by getting adequate sleep, drinking enough water, eating leafy veggies and keeping skin scrupulously clean. Another interesting point: breakouts in this area indicate when you are ovulating (and on which side).
Zone 13: Stomach — Step up the fibre intake, reduce the toxin overload and drink herbal teas to help with digestion.
14: Illness — Zits here can be a sign that your body is fighting bacteria to avoid illness. Give it a break, take a yoga class, take a nap, take time to breathe deeply, drink plenty of water and know that everything always works out!
So the next time you break out or notice dark under-eye circles, look to your face map: your skin is probably trying to communicate on behalf of the internal organs. However, do remember that, as with all medical issues, it is always best to see your doctor or dermotologist for a proper prognosis. This is just a general guide to head you off in the right investigative direction – just becuase you break out between the brows doesn’t always mean you have a bad liver!

Royal Flush!

I originally feel in love with the adorable name and cute packaging, however when I tried Poo-Pourri personally, I knew I had to carry it in the salon. Although I don't want to go on and on about the private bathroom behavior of others, I knew that using this product could probably save many from unnecessary embarrassment, as we have all been in that situation when nature calls at an inopportune time!  I also thought about how it would help keep co-workers, spouses, and visiting guests happy happy happy,   and I'm here to help!!

Poo-Pourri is a bathroom deodorizer, however believe me, it isn't like any air freshener you have ever tried.  First, Poo-Pourri is not a chemical cover up.  The formula is based on aromatherapy principles.  A squirt or two into the bowl before going #2 forms a protective layer of essential oils that prevent nasty smells from showing up in the first place.  It totally works!!

For men there's Royal Flush.  The fresh essence of eucalyptus works in synergy with spearmint ~ It's a Perfect Men's Gift.

Just in time for Father's Day we have a super cute Royal Flush gift set that includes the spray and a roll of toilet paper in an organza bag.  You can give your guy the royal treatment for $16.95, in stock now at The Wax Parlor!

This is a personal, amusing and functional product your guy will love, but probably not as much as you!

We also carry:

Trap-A-Crap by Poo-Pourri is a biodegradable and SAFE to use odor traper for any crapper. Unlike ordinary bathroom stink masking agents, this SECRET blend of natrual essential oils effectively traps the odors before they can escape and infiltrate the environment!

Spray the Loo Before No. 2 and No One Will Ever Have a Clue! A sweet bouquet of Mandarin, Bergamot and Orange enhanced by hints of Peach and Berries! A perfect gift for yourself, or any tween to college age girls or anyone young at heart!

Don't forget we sell lovely candles, our delicious lotions, beauty products and of course gift certificates that make fantastic gifts for grads, birthdays, or whatever the occasion!  See you soon! xo

Candy Coated Products Have Arrived!

We are so excited to announce the arrival of our very own Candy Coated tanning product line which includes Candy In A Can and Tan Extending Lotion!  We searched for the finest quality ingredients that would deliver a gorgeous color and nourish your skin starting at a cellular level.

Our exclusive Candy Coated product line provides the perfect combination of anti-aging and moisturizing formulas that not only extend the life of your tan but also contribute to the general good health of your skin.

Candy In A Can is our exclusive at-home tanning spray. This ultra-fine spray quickly delivers instant color that is both long lasting and smooth.  Our continuous spray system allows you to evenly spray your body at any angle to ensure easy personal use.  The amazing formula increases skin hydration which is key because hydrated skin extends the duration of your tan.

Candy In A Can also has skin firming ingredients that reduce fine lines and wrinkles!  One of the secrets to this superior product is that it contains white tea extracts, which help improve the immune function of skin cells and naturally protects the skin against harmful ultraviolet rays. We are especially happy to report that this is an orderless tanning product, so you won't have to tolerate that DHA smell commonly found in other home tanning products.  You have to try it for yourself!

Directions for use: In a well ventilated area, apply to clean, dry skin (free of lotions & oils). Shake the can vigorously for 5-10 seconds. Hold the can 12 inches away from skin and spray evenly, keeping the can in constant motion. This product can be sprayed in any direction. To access the entire contents, hold the can in an upside-down position occasionally as you spray. Stop spraying at the end of each stroke to avoid over application. Avoid direct spray into eyes, nostrils and mouth. For facial application, lightly coat a make-up sponge with spray & blend onto face.
Please note: Aerosols create a mist. The perfect place to apply this product is in the shower, where overspray can be easily washed from surrounding surfaces.

Tips for using Candy In A Can:
This cosmetic bronzer will wash off during your first shower, but your tan will deepen over the next few hours and fade gradually. Do not bathe, shower or exercise for 8 hours after application. You should avoid chlorinated swimming pools for at least 18 hours after application.
**Fair skinned individuals may require 2 applications one day apart.

Candy Coated Tan Extending Lotion is the perfect partner to Candy In A Can,  your professional spray tan, or your natural tan. In addition to the delightful packaging, our blend of Tahitian palm milk, pomegranate, and mango, leaves your skin with the lingering aura of an exotic vacation found a bottle.  It simply smells divine! But This luxurious emollient is more than a delicious fragrance in pretty packaging.

Candy Coated Tan Extending Lotion is a beautifying anti-aging hydrator that is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin.  It's perfect for all skin types and can even be used on the face. It has a hint of sunless color which when used daily will help you to build and extend your bronze tan.   Our exclusive tan extender uses Argan Oil and features an extra-cellular matrixBiotanning Complex, which helps to accentuate and lengthen the duration of your color.  CoQ10 and skin firming ingredients such as caffeine, help tone and smooth the skin, promoting cell renewal, which help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Directions for a Beautiful Tan:
Apply lotion to freshly cleansed skin. Smooth on eveny and blend thoroughly. Use sparingly around knuckles, knees, ankles and elbows. Color begins to develop in 2 to 3 hours. It is best to wait 8 hours or longer between applications. Let the lotion dry 10 minutes before dressing.

Tip when using Tan Extending Lotion:
This product does not contain sunscreen and does not protect against sunburn.
**Wash hands with soap and water immediately after application.

Consider this your invitation to come by and experience our new product line for yourself!  We just know you will love them as much as we do.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

A facial… Down There?

A common issue we see in our clients are those unsightly and often painful ingrown hairs. Women who shave their bikini area are especially prone to ingrown hairs, however they turn up anywhere hair is commonly shaved and removed including face, neck, under arms and even legs. Ingrown hairs look like pimples or scattered pinpoint tan or red bumps. They are usually associated with improper shaving and in serious cases can be cosmetically disfiguring. An ingrown hair occurs when the sharp tip of the hair curls back on itself, becomes trapped, and grows sideways into the skin. It’s especially common in the pubic area, or anywhere the hair is thick and course. Waxing definitely reduces the risk for ingrown hairs, however we always recommend an ongoing proactive approach to beauty. By being proactive, you will reduce the risk of getting one that may leave you with a scar or discoloration.

It is important to exfoliate the skin daily. Consider the care and tending we do to the skin on our face, but nowhere else really. Why do we do that? In reality, our skin is the body’s largest organ. Keeping this in mind, I recommend giving yourself a facial… down there, and anywhere you run the risk of getting an ingrown hair. This facial for your vagina, also known as a "Vajacial" is actually a new beauty trend in the industry. We like it! But no need to go to a fancy salon for your Vajacial. I'll tell you how to do it at home.

The easiest place to do it is in the shower. All you need is a face scrub that ideally contains salicylic acid, however, any scrub will do. Scrubs are granular products that are used to buff off upper layers of dead skin cells. I like to recommend the classic and commonly found Apricot Face Scrub in the peach tube by St. Ives because although I find the beads in that scrub too large and course for the face, it's perfect for the body, particularly the skin in the pubic region. Plus it’s inexpensive. Target sells a good one under their “Target” brand as well. Use the scrub on your pubic skin or bikini area daily. This will exfoliate the skin. Exfoliation removes the dead cells from layers of your skin to reveal live cells, giving the skin a better appearance and less risk for trapping hair as it grows. Dead cells also block off oxygen to the skin, making it unable to breathe. In addition to causing ingrown hairs, this contributes to pores filling up, resulting in breakouts. After the shower, apply toner to a cotton pad, and put it on the skin using upward strokes. Toners containing glycolic, salicylic, or other alpha hydroxy acids can help to prevent ingrown hairs. If you don’t have a toner with those ingredients, just use the one you have. Toners give your skin pH balance, shrink pores, and some of them even moisturize. Follow up with body lotion or my favorite beauty weapon, Vanish PFB.

There are many products on the market with claims of preventing ingrown hair. I find this one works best. Vanish PFB is a serum that is specifically for ingrown hairs, razor burn and bumps resulting from shaving, waxing, tweezing, electrolysis and laser hair removal. It has exfoliating and moisturizing ingredients that feel great on the skin and deliver results. To use, roll-on Vanish PFB to the ingrown hair morning and night. If you don't have an ingrown hair, use it once daily as part of your vajacial for maintenance and as a preventative measure. I especially recommend using it two days prior to waxing/hair removal. You can find Vanish PFB in our salon for $26.95, as well as Numb it, the lidocaine numbing gel from the same line . If you have questions about this product, how to treat ingrown hairs or how to best prepare for you next waxing appointment, feel free to give us call. We'd love to hear from you.

P.S. Ladies, you may consider this product for your man. Most likely he could benefit from Vanish PFB too. He’ll thank you for it.

Stay Beautiful! xo

The Myths About Sugaring

Hello and welcome to the Wax Parlor Blog! We are experts in the field of waxing. The main purpose of our blog is to educate you to ensure you have the most accurate information to receive the best results for your hair removal experience.

Recently we have been hearing a lot of hype surrounding a “new” way of organic waxing called Sugaring. In today’s post, I’d like to shed some light on the myths surrounding this method. Sugaring, sugar waxing, or Parisian Waxing is a method of hair removal that makes many amazing claims and seems to be a new buzzword in our industry.

First, it isn’t new. Sugaring can be traced to the Ancient Egyptians and has been in use since 1900 BC. Sugaring claims to be less painful because the substrate, or product, allegedly sticks to the hair and not skin. It can be applied to the area at room temperature or heated to luke warm temperature, therefore, sugaring claims to prevent burning. Since the product can be made from household items such as sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, honey or molasses, perhaps Sugaring’s greatest claim to fame is that it is an organic method of hair removal. This all sounds great! So what’s the problem with Sugaring?

Well, for starters, through the centuries, technology and science has developed methods that are far more hygienic, effective and lasting. Much like the first car, first airplane or the fist Lasik eye surgery method, over time new technics and ingredients have evolved the method of hair removal bringing us to today’s best method of hair removal, waxing. Certainly you wouldn’t want to take a trip in the first airplane invented. The same is true for sugaring.

Although the basic ingredients for sugaring are household items, the product is sold under various brands and often contains preservatives and other non-organic substances such as guar gum and other ingredients. There is no guarantee that you will not have a skin irritation, sensitivity or reaction to sugaring. Many people are sensitive to food allergies, plant extracts and organic beauty products.

Another problem with sugaring is the duration of your wax, or rate of hair growth. Since sugaring catches the hair on a topical level, it actually tears or breaks the hair rather than removing it from the root. This means your over priced "organic wax experience" is going to last about half the time of a regular wax service you receive in our salon or any other fine salon. Since the hair actually breaks or tears, I can assure you the pain level is about the same if not worse.

The main problem with sugaring and what actually inspired this blog post is the hygiene issue. The ancient Egyptians never heard of E. coli or Staphylococcus, but in 2012, we know all about it! The sugaring method uses a sugar ball that has a sticky taffy-like consistency. This sugar ball is used and reused continuously over the entire area being sugared, collecting the hair as it is broken off from the root. In Brazilian waxing, the anus is sugared with the same sugar ball used for the entire area. This can result in infection, bacteria spread, UTI’s and other unfortunate side effects.

At the Wax parlor, hygiene is our top priority. We use a new clean strip of cloth and a brand new application stick for every application of wax during your service. We use wax that includes a synthetic resin, which ensures the wax does not stick to your skin, avoiding any skin removal. Sugaring should never make this claim because the “natural” ingredients are actually designed to be sticky which means it sticks to your skin. It’s designed to. Our top quality waxers are highly trained to ensure the wax used is the right temperature to avoid any discomfort or burning during your treatment. The hair is removed from the root giving you the long lasting results you paid for.

A common compliment we receive from our clients is how pain less the waxing experience is with at The Wax Parlor. This is because we use two types of wax for the various sensitive areas being waxed. Also we use an exclusive technique that removes hair in smaller sections, always keeping the comfort of our clients in mind. The Wax Parlor is proud to be a waxing salon, offering you the most professional and expert hands in Orange County.

Thank you for reading our Blog! We hope to see you soon!
